We’re proud of our track record of introducing disruptive new products and technologies that have changed the direction of the server memory industry. Our latest breakthrough product, HybriDIMM™, is set to change the industry again. All of these products were made possible by the innovative, ground-breaking work of our engineers.
In the early days of the company, our engineers were primarily focused on developing custom modules for our customers. In 2003, for example, we delivered the industry’s first very low profile (VLP) module to fit in blade servers. Netlist engineers had the vision to embed resistors in the PCB in order to free up surface area. The resulting module was only 18 mm tall! Netlist’s VLP design was a commercial success and was later adopted as the industry standard.
Around 2008, the industry was working on its version of DDR3 LRDIMM. This design relied on a single memory buffer that captured and retransmitted not only the address and control signals, but the data signals as well. Problem was, having to route the data signals to the memory buffer before going to the DRAM significantly increased the trace lengths of the data path. This reduced signal integrity and introduced more latency compared to RDIMM.
Our engineers had a better approach. Rather than buffering the data signals in the middle of the module, we buffered the data along the bottom edge using nine data buffer devices distributed between the edge connector and the DRAM. This resulted in shorter data paths, improved signal integrity and reduced latency compared to the industry design. Our HyperCloud® product was the first load reduced DIMM built on this “distributed buffer architecture”.
We introduced HyperCloud to the market in 2009. HyperCloud significantly outperformed the industry’s DDR3 LRDIMM in terms of latency and speed. The industry apparently took note and adopted our distributed buffer architecture when it transitioned to DDR4 LRDIMM.
But we haven’t only been focused on memory. In 2007, Netlist engineers pioneered the idea of bringing Flash to the memory channel. Hybrid memory modules, as they later became known, combine the low cost and non-volatility of Flash with the high-speed of DRAM. Our engineers leveraged this unique combination of semiconductor raw materials to provide fast access to critical data while protecting the data in the event system power is lost. In 2012, Netlist introduced its first NVDIMM (Non-Volatile DIMM), called NVvault®.
The industry again followed Netlist’s lead. Current generation NVDIMM-N products offered on the market today provide data acceleration and protection for applications such as storage virtualization, RAID, cache protection and data logging.
Netlist is set to change the face of the computing industry again with the world’s first storage class memory (SCM) product, HybriDIMM. Our engineers leveraged their many years of experience and know-how from both HyperCloud and NVvault in the HybriDIMM design, and then tied it all together with the new PreSight™ technology. HybriDIMM sets the new standard for fast, inexpensive, persistent system memory.
